Tahu Sumedang already very popular, both in the West Java where Sumedang  city is the part of that province and in the surrounding area. Tahu Sumedang starting from the creativity that is owned by Ki No Ong and his wife who became the pioneer to produce tau in Sumedang. They continued to cultivate his efforts until around 1917, then their only child Ong Keng Dude went on. This effort continued by Ong Keng Dude, his parents chose to return to the Hokkian (people's Republic of China).
Through generations of Ong Keng Dude, his business has continued to thrive until his death at the age of 92 years. Around 1928, Regent of Sumedang, visited the tahu place of business which has been owned by the grandson of Ong keng Bung, Suryadi. Tahu Sumedang sudah sangat populer, baik di jawa barat sendiri dimana posisi Sumedang berada maupun provinsi dan didaerah sekitarnya. Tahu Sumedang berawal dari kreatifitas yang dimiliki oleh Ong Ki No dan istrinya yang menjadi perintis untk memproduksi tahu di Sumedang. Mereka terus menggeluti usahnya hingga sekitar tahun 1917, dan anak tunggal mereka Ong Bung Keng untuk melanjutkannya. Usaha ini terus dilanjutkan oleh Ong Bung Keng, kedua orangtuanya memilih kembali ke Hokkian Republik Rakyat Tiongkok.
Melalui generasi Ong Bung Keng, usahanya terus berkembang hingga akhir hayatnya di usia 92 tahun. Sekitar tahun 1928, Bupati Sumedang mendatangi tempat usaha tahu tersebut yang sudah dipegang oleh cucu Ong Bung keng, Suryadi. Bupati Sumedang saat itu Pangeran Soeria Atmadja sedang melintas menggunan dokar dalam perjalanan menuju Situraja. Kebetulan saang pangeran melihat kakek yang sedang menggreng sesuatu. Pangeran langsung turun  begitu melihat bentuk makanan yang unik serta baunya yang harum. Sang Pangeran lalu bertanya kepada sang kakek 'Maneh keur ngagoreng naon? (Kamu sedang menggoreng apa?), sang kakek berusaha menjawab sebisanya dan menjelaskan makanan yang ia goreng terbuat dari tahu. Karena penasaran, sang pangeran langsung mencicipi satu. Setelah mencicipi, bupati spontan berkata dengan wajah puas 'enak benar makanan ini, coba kamu jual pasti laris'. Tak lama setelah itu masyarakat Sumedang gemar mengkonsumsi tahu tersebut, hingga sekarang tahu sumedang sudah tersebar luas hinngga jauh keluar Sumedang.
